§3 · The Patterns That Matter

What the leaderboard misses.

Each dot = one of 1551 tracked firms

Two questions the rankings don't answer on their own: how much of AI visibility comes from traditional SEO, and which firms break the pattern.

The Authority Gap

Google Authority vs. AI Visibility

Ahrefs Domain Rating on X, AI Visibility on Y. Firms below the diagonal have built strong SEO that ChatGPT can't see. Firms above it are punching way above their SEO weight.

The gap
9%
of a firm's AI visibility comes from its SEO domain strength. The other 91% comes from somewhere we're still mapping.
Even the strongest SEO domains in our index don't reliably get named when someone asks the AI for a lawyer. The relationship is there. It's just small. The 64 firms here with strong SEO that the AI keeps skipping over (including SMS Legal, The Lanier Law Firm, Pittsburgh Injury Lawyers P.C., Agemian Law Group, Mike Morse Injury Law Firm) have years of backlinks and Google trust to their name. None of it has shown up in how often the AI names them.
§3.3 · The Weird Data

Three patterns the rankings don't explain.

Pulled from this week's data. Every story below names specific firms and shows the math.

01
The AI visibility disconnect

The SEO giants the AI keeps ignoring.

High Ahrefs Domain Rating used to mean you'd win Google. These are the highest-DR firms the AI mentions less than once per 100 prompts (VS under 1.0).

If your firm runs on SEO authority alone, the AI doesn't know. Citation velocity beats domain authority.
02
The inverse pattern

The unexpected AI leaders without SEO clout.

Among firms the AI actually names (VS above 0.3), these three have the weakest SEO footprint. Google doesn't reward whatever they're doing. ChatGPT does.

These firms are the AI's reverse engineering homework. What signal is the model picking up that Ahrefs can't see?
03
The hometown specialists

The AI knows them by zip code.

These firms dominate one market but barely register nationally. To the AI they're local stars; outside their best market they almost don't exist.

Local backlinks built that one-market lead. Getting cited by national legal publications is what spreads the AI's recognition.
§4 · The Map

What America Looks Like to the AI.

51 of 50 states + D.C. with data · one bubble each · sized by the state leader's VS

Each bubble is one state, or Washington D.C., where the AI named a personal-injury firm this week. 51 of the 50 states + D.C. show up. Size = the state leader's visibility score. Color groups places by the firm that wins them. The white dot inside a bubble means the AI cited that leader's domain (it didn't just name them, it linked to them).

§6 · What It Takes

AI doesn't just rank websites. It calculates a trust score.

AI systems assign a trust score to every firm based on authority signals across the entire web. To show up when a client asks who to call, your signals need to be structured, consistent, and strong enough to be cited.

To enter this loop, you need to build four things:

01

Be recognized as relevant

AI must be able to identify what kind of lawyer you are, where you practice, and what case types you handle. Firms with inconsistent or incomplete entity data are invisible to AI by default.

02

Be interpreted correctly

Your expertise needs to be expressed in language AI uses to describe legal expertise. Most law firm websites speak to humans. AI needs structured context it can parse, cite, and repeat.

03

Be trusted as an authority

Authority in AI comes from citation patterns — who mentions you, where you're referenced, how consistently your name appears alongside high-trust legal topics across the web.

04

Make authority durable

AI recommendations are updated continuously. A one-time effort fades. Firms that show up consistently build compounding authority that gets harder for competitors to displace.

§7 · For Law Firm Marketing Teams

Your firm is in this data. Do you know where?

We run 26,475 AI prompts across 256 U.S. markets every week and read every answer. Your firm shows up somewhere in that data. Named in some, passed over for a competitor in others. Ask us for the scorecard and you'll see exactly where you sit.

LawShift's AI Authority Protocol is a proprietary system that maps and reinforces the signals AI uses to evaluate trust, expertise, and relevance, establishing your firm's authority inside AI recommendation environments. Built on how AI actually works: schema, context, entity recognition, topical authority density, structural signals across your entire digital presence. Purpose-built for PI firms. Designed to get you recommended.

§8 · Methodology

How the index is built.

Published weekly

Each week we pose thousands of personal-injury questions to 4 AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) across 256 U.S. metro markets. This week we collected 26,475 responses. We read each one and note which firms it named and which domains it cited. Every number on this report comes with a likely-range band, so a small week-over-week move doesn't get mistaken for a real shift.
